Metal Processing Unit

A pioneering unit, offering the visually impaired workers the transition from manual work to industrial production, creating new opportunities for professional rehabilitation.

About the Unit

The department began its operation in 1984 during an electrical/mechanical training course for people with visual problems. The production process started in 1985 with the manufacturing of labeling metal plates for the Public Energy Company (DEI) and spare parts of EVO’S weapons (the greek military industry), while at the same time the sections of screen-printing and metallization were starting their operation. During the years the new Assembly Department was created.

In 1996, it obtained a license from the Ministry of Industry, while the innovative design was noted and the implementation of mass production of the unique Greek White Cane for blind people began.

The upgrading of its equipment and the training of its employees is continuous, while the modern Production Unit, under strict specifications, has developed a wide network of collaborations with customers in Greece and abroad, such as Siemens, EVIOP-TEMPO, BSH, Intracom, ELSA, while the first exports to Romania, Nigeria, etc. have been realized from the collaboration with Frigoglass.

The person in charge of the Unit is Mr. George Karkoulias, a blind man himself, who in 1996 was awarded by the Academy of Athens for the creation and organization of the Unit, as well as for his ingenuity and the broader services he has offered in the field of visually impaired people.
