Our Mission

The Lighthouse for the Blind of Greece, under operation since 1946, is a Non-profit Association, Specially Recognized as Philanthropic and specially certified as Social Care Service Provider. Its activities are supervised by the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs and it is financially supported by the Prefecture of Attica on behalf of the Greek state.

Fundamental aims

Τhe mission and fundamental aims of the association as defined in its articles are:

  • The social integration and the professional training of the visually impaired ones, along with the development of their other skills, abilities and dexterities to the highest possible degree, as equal members of society.
  • Τhe support of the visually impaired and the elimination of blindness’ consequences for their independence, both in their daily lives and their
    professions, through special methods and tools and the assistance of modern technology.
  • The provision of social services to the visually impaired (blind, partially sighted and newly-blinded ones) and their families.
  • Exploring opportunities and means of broadening the intellectual and educational level of the visually impaired.
  • Public information of the capabilities as well as the difficulties that visually impaired people face in their everyday life.
  • Informing the State about the internationally applied legal framework regarding vision loss and the pressure for relevant implementation in our country, as well as cooperation with other institutions and associations to promote the effective integration of blind people in society.
  • The promotion in the market of blind workers’ products on their behalf.

Continuous Care

The Lighthouse for the Blind of Greece, with its long experience and know-how in ensuring equal chances for All in all fields of everyday life, has been on constant and totally promising efforts for innovative relevant programs and good practices towards this direction. In order to achieve our goals, we have been developing new practices and enhancing our services and at the same time upgrading our technological equipment and constantly monitoring the technological developments in matters of blindness internationally.

The average number of our beneficiaries per year is more than 2.000 people in Greece, Cyprus and expatriate Greeks abroad.

The Lighthouse for the Blind of Greece is one of the Partner associations of the “Greek Guide Dogs” and a Member of the “World Blind Union”.
